Environment Canada road forecast model now available

Environment Canada is pleased to announce that its road forecast model
METRo is now available as free and open source software under the terms
of the GPL license.

METRo is a program used on a operational basis since 1999 that together
with the input of an atmospheric forecast, road composition and
observations from a road weather station (RWIS), produces a local road
forecast (temperature and road condition) for a 48-hour period, this in
less than 2 seconds of computation time on a simple desktop computer.
All the input and output of METRo are in XML format. Installation of the
METRo program is relatively simple on a GNU/Linux system in less than a
day.

By distributing METRo as free and open source software, Environment
Canada will help the public, private and academic sectors by providing a
model that can be used, studied, modified and improved. Under the
leadership of Environment Canada, the development model of METRo will
catalyze the expertise of these different participants and produce
benefits for citizens of the world by providing better winter road
forecasts.

Environnement Canada est fier d'annoncer que son modèle de prévision
routière METRo est maintenant disponible comme logiciel libre sous
licence GPL.

METRo est un logiciel utilisé opérationnellement depuis 1999 qui, à
l'aide d'une prévision atmosphérique, d'observations et de la
composition de la route d'une station météorologique routière (RWIS),
génère une prévision routière (température et conditions de la route) en
un point pour une période de 48 heures, ce en moins de 2 secondes de
calcul sur un simple ordinateur de bureau. Les entrées et sorties de
METRo sont en format XML. METRo peut être installé en moins d'une
journée sur un système GNU/Linux.

En distribuant METRo en tant que logiciel libre, Environnement Canada
entend ainsi aider les secteurs public, privé et académique en
fournissant un modèle qu'il est possible d'utiliser, d'étudier, de
modifier et d'améliorer. Sous le leadership d'Environnement Canada, le
modèle de développement de METRo catalysera ainsi l'expertise des
intervenants concernés et permettra un meilleur entretien des routes en
conditions hivernales, tout cela dans le but d'accroître la sécurité des
conducteurs de véhicules routiers et de leurs passagers, partout sur la
planète.
